The problems ⚠️ with copying a folder in Google Drive

🚫
No native solution. Google Drive does not offer a built-in way to duplicate an entire folder. Downloading ⬇️ a folder and re-uploading it is slow, error-prone, and can alter file formatting—especially for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides—so your structure and edits don’t stay intact 👎 (see “Copying Google Sheets from one Drive to another” on r/googlesheets).
🚧
Limited or expensive alternatives. Many tools either charge more than $5-10/month or struggle with larger jobs (200–500+ files), making them impractical for real-world use.

A pain point 😤 felt across Google Workspace

📣
It's a widespread frustration. Google Workspace users have been asking for a true folder-copy feature for years—see ongoing community discussions like “Why is copying a Google Drive folder still such a hassle?” and “How to copy a folder and its subfolders?” on r/gsuite—proving this is a real, daily pain point, not a niche edge case.

Frequently asked questions

What Workspace Studio can and cannot copy, and when a shared folder can be duplicated.

No. Custom Apps Script steps in Google Workspace Studio do not replace copying a folder.

Custom steps are off by default. A Workspace administrator has to enable them before anyone in the organization can use a published custom step. Turning them on does not copy a folder for you. You still have to build and maintain the Apps Script that walks the folder and copies each file and subfolder.

The built-in Copy step is capped at 50 files and 3 subfolders. A folder above either limit is outside what that step can copy. Drive I/O copies the full folder, including nested files and subfolders, from the Chrome extension or the Workspace add-on.

Yes. You can copy a folder that was shared with you when your access on that folder allows it.

Editors can copy the shared folder. If you only have viewer access, the owner must allow viewers to download, print, and copy. Google Drive blocks the copy for viewers when that option is turned off.

The sharing setting, and how to run the copy in Drive I/O, are covered in Copy a shared Google Drive folder with Drive I/O.
